VISION

Bloom Creative Studio is a program of Connections for Women, a local community-based non-profit organization serving women living in the Slate Belt.

We believe art heals and that everyone deserves a chance to start over.

Our Studio will be a supportive workplace for women leaving lives of addiction and violence. They will receive 2 years of rent-free housing while they heal from the trauma life on the streets brings. When a woman enters our program she begins a 90-day intensive outpatient recovery program and then continues to build a life free from addiction and violence, with trauma informed and art therapy, life coaching and vocational training. Bloom Bangor graduates go on to live successful, self-sufficient and fulfilling lives, creating a new future for themselves, their families, our community and our economy.

Bloom Bangor is a community empowering women to live free from addiction and violence.

Our program launched in early 2016 and is modeled after the successful Magdalene Nashville Program also known as Thistle Farms, which was founded in 1997.  The programs are designed not just to help a subculture of women, but to help change the culture itself.  The organizations stand in solidarity with women who are recovering from sexual abuse, violence, and life on the streets, and who have paid dearly for a culture that buys and sells women like commodities.

Bloom Bangor provides:

  • Two years of housing

  • A community based on our motto "love heals"

  • Help to residents to live honest, sober, and self-sufficient lives

  • Educational and vocational opportunities

  • Fostering of self-understanding through personal and spiritual growth counseling

  • Life-skill building and maintenance education

  • Opportunities to work toward economic self-sufficiency through Bloom Creative Studio and other business partners

  • access to medical and dental care

Bloom Bangor's programs advocate living gracefully in community with one another. New residents are given a key and are offered the necessary resources to maintain recovery, heal from childhood wounds, become physically healthy and find employment. Residents, graduates, staff and volunteers share daily tasks, offer hospitality, build upon each other's strengths, and provide compassionate, disciplined support.

Before graduating with a BA in Mathematics and Art History at Oberlin College, Kal trained in pastel, watercolor, oil, silk painting, Chinese ink, charcoal, wax, and cartooning/graphic illustration.  Classes are primarily renditions of famous paintings, contemporary still lives, and landscape scenes, along with more whimsical quick crafts involving much glitter. Kal delights in teaching classes for ages 4 to 144; this artist firmly believes that everyone can make art and that art classes should be compassionate spaces of nurtured vulnerability.
